Consumer demand for alternatives to Big Tech’s social programs heat. Alternative social networks like Bluesky and Mastodon get traction with people looking to leave X, while others are Building forbidden Tik -Tika alternatives on open protocols. Similarly, many independent developers also work on open, decentralized alternatives to Instagram, the Meta Flagship Exchange App with over 2 billion monthly active users.
While none of the newcomers are anywhere near ready to rival the size and extent of meta, their ability to even carve a small niche within the shadow of Meta is convincing. Pixelfed
Although not a new service, the photo-sharing website Pixelfed in January launched official mobile programs for iOS and Android. The app is built on ActivityPub, used by Mastodon, a YouTube competitor named Peertube, and many others, including now Meta Meta Threads And Flipboard (plus its newer program, Surf). Together, these programs form what is called the “Fediverse”, a reference to the federal servers that contain it.
Similar to Instagram, Pixelfed allows users to share and explore photos and videos and send direct messages. However, unlike Instagram, Pixelfed is a free, open source, decentralized and default to chronological foods-which are its sales points to users.
Within its first two days on the market, Pixelfed’s mobile programs peaked 10,000 downloads, developer Daniel Supernault said on mastodon.

As it is essentially a photo-first Bluesky client, users who post on flashes will appear in Bluesky’s posts, while Bluesky’s comments on these posts will also appear in flashes. The app is part of a trio of Bluesky customers built by developer Sebastian Vogelsang, which also includes Twitter-like app Skeets and a video program Bluescran. Eventually, the idea is to offer premium subscriptions that encompass these programs, allowing people to change among customers.
Pinksky
Another Bluesky client, Pinksky, also addresses the idea of offering a photo-first view of the social network. Designed to attract former Instagram users who want to connect with photos instead of viral content or reels, the app features a familiar interface – including a section of Tappable Stories at the top. But unlike new programs built by scratch, Pinksky users can enter their existing network of Bluesky’s friends and followers, even if these people are not yet Pinksky users.
Currently the app is just a Bluesky client, but if there is enough demand, Pinksky may expand to include other technologies, such as integrations with ActivityPub or Nostr. To date, the app is free to use, although it may later add premium functions if it grows enough to support monetization.
Skygram
Currently work in progress, Skygram There is a web-based app designed to offer a more photo-centric Bluesky experience. Within Skygram, users can switch between interesting foods at the top of the screen, such as gardening, dogs and others, for example.
