Thousands of people pay tribute to senior Communist Party leader vs Achuthanandan, whose funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Thousands of people crowded the streets, paying tribute to the politician, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Kerala’s political history.

Achuthanandan was forced to drop out of school as a child, overcame poverty and torture in police custody and became one of the state’s most popular leaders.

He was treated at a hospital in Tiravanaella after his cardiac arrest last month. His funeral will be held near his hometown in Alapazha District and will receive statewide honors.

“Fighting for the rights of the oppressed and exploited is the guiding principle of his life,” Ma Baby, secretary general of the Achuthanandan Party, or the CPI (M), Write pay tribute. He described the leader as “the microcosm of struggle.”

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also comes from CPI(M), calling Achuthanandan a “unlimited repository of inspiration and courses”.

In addition to serving as Chief Minister of Kerala, Achuthanandan is the national leader of the three opposition and has been a member of the CPI (M) Politburo for 23 years.

Achuthanandan’s popularity among Indian communists is only comparable to long-serving West Bengal Chief Minister and co-founder of CPI (M).

But unlike Basu, who is educated in London, Achuthanandan comes from a source of modesty and fails to complete his studies. Basu has shaped his legacy, and Achuthanandan does so from the street, advocating the issue of people as opposition leaders.

Achuthanandan began to be young after losing her mother at the age of four and her 11-year-old father. As a teenager, he joined an undivided Communist Party at the age of 17 and began organizing agricultural workers in Travancore, who then ruled India.

AK Antony, former Chief Minister of the Congressional Party of Kerala, said in the 1960s he would wait for Achuthanandan’s speech next to Paddy Fields.

The Hindu newspaper said: “The life and struggle of Achuthanandan, the torture and assault he suffered in the communist protests in Kuttanad, was unparalleled.”

Achuthanandan led the 1946 uprising against state authorities, and hundreds of communists were reportedly killed. He went underground, was later arrested, detained and tortured, and stayed in jail for five years.

His work spans labor rights, land rights, education, women’s rights, anti-corruption measures and environmental protection.

Achuthanandan is a determined communist and is not afraid to defy his party – especially when he met the widow of TP Chandrasekharan, who was murdered in 2012 by a gang, including a former CPI(M) colleague after he formed his own party after he went bankrupt.

After public outcry forced CPI(M) to reverse his attempt to eliminate him in 2006 and 2011, Achuthanandan, who served as Chief Minister of Kerala (2006-2011), then retired after a stroke in 2019 and lived with his son in Thiruvananthapuram.
