Since his debut at Sundance earlier this year, fans of horror have had Michael Shanks’ new movie, Togetheron their radars. Neon picked up it outside the festival and, after some Really scary trailers and marketingopened it in theaters last weekend with solid results. It is a provocative, surprising and incredibly disgusting movie with final viewers will not soon forget. Ending achieved by traditional methods of visual effects and without alluding to AI.
According to that warning about spoiler above, we are to explain what is happening at the end of TogetherSo if you haven’t seen it and want, we encourage you to look away now.
In the movie Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) are infected with this unexplained force, who wants their bodies to become one. The how and why behind it is quite strange, mysterious and funny, but then the couple realizes that the only way to overcome this force is to give it. So we look like their bodies combine from two into one, and, in the final shot of the movie, a whole new man, the amalgamation of both, opens the door to Millie’s visiting parents.
Speaking of further Podcast by Indiewire filmmakerShanks explained that both the mixing of the bodies and the new character were achieved without the use of AI. “The number of projections I went now, and people come to me and say,” Was Ai at the end? “It’s so crazy that people assume that AI is now the cause.” As a VFX, like someone who has worked with all these teams who work so much work is so frustrating now that people look at something that looks interesting or good, and they [assume] Only computer did it. It’s like, ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ ”
Instead, the character “Tillie” was created by makeup and visual effects composed by Genevieve Camilleri. “In pre -production, Gen just ascended and took pictures of Dave and Alison and then in Nuke, she made a set of varieties, on which elements of which of them find out what is essential to see both in that final image,” Shanks said.
Then, on the day, the director shot the scene with both actors. “After we shot the scene with Alison, we moved to Dave, with a bunch of points on his face,” he continued. “Gen took his jaw and his lips and fixed it on the bottom [of the face]. It’s really a combination of makeup and, you wouldn’t call it CGI, because nothing computer generates, but it’s composed. ”
Stepping a little of the features of TogetherIt is wild that Shanks has to defend that his film has not used generatively AI. If it came out even 3-4 years ago, it wouldn’t even be a thought. We would all just assume that it is one of them dressing up as the other or visual effects. Ultimately, it’s both. But the whole conversation changed when we started living in a world where you can insert “Dave Franco and Alison Brie as one person” into a program and get something back in seconds. Basically, offers Shanks to do something right, working hard and doing something memorable. And Boo to the world to make us forget that the true magic of filming comes from the human touch.
