WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump has been invited to a joint session of Congress on March 4, House Republican Rep. Mike Johnson said on Saturday.
“It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite President Donald Trump to address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to share his initial vision for our future,” Johnson said on the social media platform X and shared a share with a social media platform It was also released by his office.
It will be Trump’s first such address since taking office on January 20th. Trump’s Republican Party has a narrow majority in the House and a more comfortable one in the Senate.
Trump is pushing a plan to explicitly use revenue from higher tariffs on imported goods to pay for expanding taxes on dollars.
He has threatened sweeping import tariffs but has yet to impose any.
Lawmakers and analysts said such a push in Congress would likely face opposition from many Republicans, particularly budget hawks concerned about the reliability and durability of tariff revenues, as well as the potential dangers the wars pose to individuals affect districts and voters.
The president and his allies say he wants to use them similarly to the personal and corporate taxes that make up the vast majority of U.S. revenue, increasing tariffs to pay for government programs and cover promised tax cuts.
