Tariff negotiations continue

Trump will end a 90-day tariff pause on July 9 after he first announced reciprocity tariffs on foreign countries in April. Trump told reporters Sunday that his administration will start sending letters to other countries on Monday and notify them that higher tariffs will now take effect on August 1.

“It could be 12, maybe 15 letters,” Trump told reporters on Sunday. “And we have reached a deal, so we will combine one letter and have some deals.” ”

Bessent says

The ongoing tariff negotiations come after Congress passed Trump’s “Big and Beautiful Act,” which raised the president’s agenda on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and national debt, and signed it into law on Friday.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent joined Fox News’ Shannon Bream on Sunday and explained the new August 1 deadline, warning that tariffs would return to April levels if trade agreements were not conducted abroad in early August.

“Is the July 9 deadline paused for some of these trading partners?” Bream asked.

“I think it’s a bit paused because I think what’s going on is that there’s a lot of congestion at home and as part of the trade team, the benefit of having President Trump on our side is that he creates the biggest leverage.”

He added: “By telling our trading partners that they can boomerang back to the April 2 date, I think that will indeed continue to move forward in the next few days and weeks.”
