News of announcing new sector-specific tariffs suggests Trump is putting pressure on businesses to produce their products in the United States
Trump has previously said that the responsibilities of chips and semiconductors have become a key component of almost every industry and may begin next week.
“We will put a lot of tariffs on chips and semiconductors,” Trump said in the Oval Office Wednesday afternoon.
“But the good news for a company like Apple is that if you build in the U.S. or are committed to building in the U.S. without a doubt, there will be no fees,” he said.
“So, in other words, we’re going to impose a tax rate of about 100% on chips and semiconductors. But if you build in the United States of America, then you don’t care.”
