During last year’s campaign, Donald Trump assured that he would not tolerate left-wing laws on the streets of the United States and would use the full force of his presidential power to respond.
The protests from immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) efforts in California on Saturday night opened up his promise.
That’s OK, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the protests were basically peaceful, or those more destructive protests involved only a few hundred people.
Trump administration officials say immigration agents are targeted and injured – local law enforcement responds too slowly.
“Waiting for a few hours to come on LAPD – or they told us that officers in dangerous situations won’t support us until they engage in violent protests,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirsty Noem told CBS News on Sunday morning.
On objections to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the Trump federal government warned 2,000 California National Guard soldiers and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that the U.S. Marines are also on “high alert” to deploy – which would mark the rare use of active-duty military personnel on U.S. land.
By Sunday morning, Trump declared his victory and thanked the National Guard for restoring peace, although the Guard had not been assembled.
Trump’s response rate shows that it’s a battle his administration prepares for – even aspires to have.
The White House believes that law, order, and active immigration enforcement are winning problems for him.
His actions will thrive at the core of his supporters and may support political independents who care about public safety.
Noem said in an interview that the 2020 protests in Minnesota were allowed to spread unrestrictedly – the new Trump administration will handle things differently.
“We are not going to let 2020 happen again,” she said.
However, Democrats say the government uses masked immigration officials with military equipment to arrest civilians in restaurants and shops, and the president’s desire to deploy trained soldiers is unfounded.
“For the president not to ask for this, the breakdown of the tradition passed down from generation to generation will only incite the situation and make the situation worse,” said Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.
“Many peaceful protests are happening because the U.S. president is arresting immigration hearings that appear in those who are following the law to play chaos and confusion.”
The United States has a long tradition of summer protests until early June.
Five months after Trump’s second term, these California demonstrations could be an isolated incident or a bigger civil unrest begins in the coming days.
