An Australian state surrenders boxes before requiring citizens to ban weapons designed to strike across the state Knife crime.
Victoria, Australia Police departments across the state will have more than 40 machete disposal bins to choose from on Thursday to allow citizens to safely get rid of weapons without penalty before the September 1 ban begins.
“Owning, carrying, using, buying or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval would be a criminal offence,” the Victorian government said in a statement.
From September 1 to November 30, the government will hold a “machete amnesty” period on September 1 to support the safe handling of machetes. Those who do not surrender to the machete during the amnesty may face up to two years in prison or fines of more than $47,000 ($31,725).
