Washington State University launches ‘Queer Pole Fit’ class


Washington State University (WSU) Offering free “Queer Pole Fitness” classes to help challenge the stigma of pole dancing and provide an inclusive “safe space” for “queer” people.

The free classes are held every Friday, no registration is required, and are “open to all LGBTQ+ and their allies!” according to one Description on university website.

“Queer Pole Fit aims to create a community and environment that helps people feel safe and break stereotypes about pole dancing. Teach by our queer pole dancing instructors, follow your heart and enjoy this fun and challenging form,” The course description continues.

Laura Yasinitsky, University Recreation and Fitness Coordinator, Tell Evergreen Daily – a news source for the university – said in a recent article that the classes are designed to welcome those who have traditionally been left out or not “supported” in their fitness journeys.

“It’s being labeled queer. You can be who you are and others will see you the same way,” she said.

Yasinitsky added that the goal of the program is to “break down” boundaries and welcome beginners to a “safe space” where they can “try new things.”

Queer pole fitness instructor Ri Scovel told the media that by focusing on “queer” people, the class challenges the pole class model for “ladies”, expanding the sport to an often overlooked group, while also providing a space for a Insulted dance method.

The university reportedly began offering the courses last January and continues to attract new students.
