Today, Apple has announced The latest version of its Mac -operating system, MacOS tahoeSporting a handful of new features and programs. The update will also mark the final substantial version of MacOS to be supported by Intel-based MACS.
The final supported Intel-based MACs, which will receive MacOS Tahoe, include the following models: MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, four ports Thunderbolt 3), IMAC (27-inch, 2020) and Mac Pro (2019). That means, if you own one of these Macs, you will still get access to all the features in the update later this -autumn when MacOS Tahoe launches. The only exception is that everything depends on Apple’s intelligence will not be available, as these features are limited only to Apple Silicon machines.
Passed five years from the beginning of the Intel transition to Apple Silicon. At the time, Apple has stated that it “would continue to support and release new versions of MacOS for Intel-based MACs for the coming years.” Intel-based MACs older than 2019 has already stopped receiving software updates, and now it’s time for the last generation of models to remove itself from the list.
Fortunately, Apple will provide security updates for these Intel-based MACs for three more years. This is quite solid for machines that are over five years.
I recommended against buyers buying Intel-based MACs for years. Intel Macs ‘jump to even the initial M1-MACS is a huge jump regarding performance and battery life, though I’m sure some people will be seduced by Intel Macs’ ultra-noted prices in recent years. Now we know for sure where is the end of the road that will hopefully convince some at least to buy M1 MacBook Air.
Apple will also finish Rosetta, the company’s emulate layer to operate non-native programs on Apple Silicon. It was key to Apple’s early success in transition to its own chips. For anything but old games, the software provided by Apple will only be available with MacOS 26 and MacOS 27. More than everything, it’s another way for Apple to encourage developers to end up transferring their programs to work natively on Apple Silicon.
