Promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s open to a fight between Berlanga and Pacheco. However, he looked skeptical, as if he didn’t believe Edgar was serious about fighting Diego. Hearn was a wise owl and knew that the chances of a conflict between Berlanga and Pacheco were slim.
Canelo effect
Berlanga’s financial demands may be high after earning a massive bonus for his successful victory over unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Like many fighters who face Canelo, he may be spoiled for choice and hope to earn similar money in his next fight. That won’t happen.
Even if Berlanga vs. Pacheco plays up the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry, the fight won’t result in PPV buys. It’s not worth selling on pay-per-view and would require Turki Al-Sheikh’s involvement to pay Berlanga the money he might want.
Berlanga is rumored to want to fight the 39-year-old veteran Gabe Rosado Next up was Puerto Rico, capitalizing on his popularity in the country. After losing to Canelo, he was viewed as a hero. Journeyman Rosado is right up Berlanga’s alley.
