Google is preparing to bring YouTube to create iOS devices almost two years after the video editing of the video editing launched exclusively on Android. Jobs reviewed by Techcrunch reveals that the company is actively hiring engineers in India for the iOS development project.
The jobs Show Google recruits software engineers in Bengaluru specifically to build the iOS version. The original Android app debuted In the United States and seven other markets in September 2023, later expanded to 13 additional markets By February 2024.
YouTube Create provides free mobile video editing tools designed for content creators, offering functions such as stickers, GIFs and effects for both YouTube pants and longer shaped videos. Google has developed the application after consulting with 3,000 creators to ensure that it meets their needs.
The app is Google’s attempt to compete with Bytedance’s popular capture editor. But exclusive sensor tower data shared with Techcrunch shows YouTube Create is quite far behind Capcut and another established competitor, INSHOT.
The competition is not even close. In the second quarter of this year, Capcut and INSHOT have been downloaded 66 million and 21 million times respectively on Android devices. On the contrary, YouTube Create has seen less than 500,000 downloads this quarter, and only 4 million downloads since its launch.
The user engagement is even more pronounced. Capcut has over 442 million monthly users on Android -App in Q2, while INSHOT claims 92 million. YouTube creates delays far back with less than one million monthly active users.

In iOS – the YouTube Create platform now aims – the competition is equally fierce. Capcut is leading with 194 million monthly active users in Q2, followed by INSHOT with 25 million. Meanwhile, the editing of Capcut and Instagram ruled iOS -fourth -fourth, with 28 million and 7 million downloads respectively.
Despite staying the numbers, YouTube Create shows some move, with 28% year-on-year growth of monthly active users in Q2, exceeding a 9% increase for hood and a 7% decrease for INSHOT, depending on the sensor data.
“While it boasts a solid growth of users a year, YouTube Create has struggled to support some of its larger, more established peers like Capcut, with the latter having more than 10x the number of monthly active users,” Abe Yousef said, a senior analysis of Sensor Tower.
YouTube Create may be building a more loyal user base, YouseF suggested. Growing active using numbers along with declining downloads could indicate that people who have previously tried the application return to use it regularly.
“Capcut came out many years ago, attached to the fact that it is perfectly integrated with its sister app, Tiktok, is likely to play this material difference with YouTube Create,” said Yousef.
However YouTube Create is facing some restraint problems. Its 90-day retention rate-the percentage of users who have downloaded the application and still use it 90 days later-was about 1% in Q1, far below the 7% of Capcut and 4% of INSHOT.
Engagement metrics also emphasize the gap. Users spend an average of 38 minutes a month on YouTube Cread, compared with 62 minutes for Capcut users. Capcut users also open the application more often, averaging 23 sessions monthly against 11 for YouTube Create.
Geographically, the YouTube Creatube user base is diversified. India accounted for 67% of the total monthly active users on YouTube created in last year’s second quarter, but that part dropped to 51% this quarter, as the app gains traction elsewhere. However, YouTube Create seems to be earning sticky in India, with daily monthly active user relationships improving 9% last year to, so far, 12% this year.
In addition to India, Indonesia has emerged as the second largest YouTube Create market, accounting for 21% of its global monthly active users. Germany (5%), Brazil (4%), and the UK (3%) round the top markets.
The app shows a particularly strong growth in several other markets, also with year-on-year monthly active using increases of 119% in Spain, 91% in South Korea, 89% in France, and 71% in Singapore.
“YouTube’s iOS release could absolutely help the platform grow its market part, though fierce competition in space both of other social media supported by video editing platforms and native video editors will persist,” Yousef said.
