Xander Zayas said he plans to beat Jorge Garcia Perez’s vacant WBO junior and middle class champion this Saturday, and then hopes to fight immediately with WBC 154-pound champion Sebastian Fundora. Zayas (21-0, 13 KOS) talks, it’s just a form he’ll beat #2 Perez (33-4, 26 KOS) to capture the vacant WBO title.

Zayas-Perez will be headlined at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City on July 26. The event will be displayed live on ESPN and ESPN+ at 9:00 pm ET for the main card. The preliminaries begin at 5:10 ET.

It would have looked better if Zayas beat some quality fighters to win his first place, as it looks like he was slyly manipulated rather than letting him win his place with the A-level fighter. Judge for yourself. These are Xander’s last three opponents:

It’s no accident that the highest rankings are against Zayas against these fighters instead of Vergil Ortiz Jr, Israel Madrimov, Serhii Bohachuk or Yoenis Tellez.
“I want to bring to my island, but I want to bring to Xander Zayas,” Zayas said.
Xander can’t be the next Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad or Wilfredo Benitez to join Puerto Rico because he lacks punching power and he has a lot of rabbits in it. Zayas’s battle is more like a cross between Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson. That’s not praise either.
The reason Zayas’s popularity has not increased is that his style is not entertaining. He is a larger version of Haney. The top ranking player Zayas pushed to fans in the hope of turning him into a star, but this is a failure. He lacks the “factor” that fans are looking for.
Zayas’s Unification Dream
“When I became a world champion, we can still make the fight happen in the future,” Zayas said about Sebastian Fundora. “I don’t think it’s a duck. He made a business decision.”
This is an obvious choice for Fundora. In a fight with TSZYU, heading towards a happy payday in the battle fans want to see, instead of fighting against the small amount of money from Zayas. If Puerto Rican-born Xander is popular, it makes sense for Fundora to fight him. He brought nothing to the table.
