Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that he would make concessions to Russia’s territory ahead of the scheduled meeting before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s future in the Ukrainian war.
The United States and Russia Conference is Will be held in Alaska on August 15.
Hours before the announcement of the meeting, Trump said Ukraine may have to ced its territory to end the war, which began with a full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022.
“Ukrainians will not hand over their land to the occupiers,” Zelensky said in a telegram post on Saturday. He reiterated that Ukraine must participate in any peace solution and said he was ready to work with partners in search of “real” and “lasting” peace.
Zelensky said Ukraine “will not award Russian awards for everything it does.”
He added: “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question is already in the Ukrainian constitution. No one will and cannot deviate from this.”
His statement said in a comment from Trump at the White House on Friday that “will be replaced with territory to improve both.”
“You are looking for territory that has been fighting for three and a half years, and many Russians die. Many Ukrainians die.”
He did not provide any further details on the appearance of such suggestions.
Trump later announced a meeting between himself and Putin and said further details would follow. The meeting was later confirmed by the Kremlin.
Zelensky said on Saturday that Ukraine is ready for “a real solution that can bring peace” but stressed that Ukraine needs to be involved.
“Any solution against us, i.e., no solution without Ukraine, is a solution against peace,” he said.
“We are ready to work with President Trump, and all our partners, for a real and most importantly lasting peace – a peace that will not collapse because of Moscow’s will.”
