Below, we sit down with McCormack to discuss the big opening, what makes her work unique, and the philosophy she truly lives in your jewelry.
Q: How did you decide to get into jewelry?
Jessica McCormack: My upbringing and my time at Sotheby’s had a profound impact on the way I designed it. As an auctioneer, my dad introduced me to the world of art and antiques since he was a child, which gave me an early appreciation of beautiful things, whether old or new. At Sotheby’s Cartier and Lalique and multiple crown jewels. This exposure is not only creative, but also shows me the possible level of craftsmanship in jewelry design. I started designing a small studio in Crackenwell and a handful of artisans – 17 years later, some of them are still with me.
Q: I know what you have said. “What fun would it be with jewelry if it was just a jewellery that was sitting in a safe at home without getting worn out!” Can you tell me more about your spirit about jewelry?
JM: When I designed, I was thinking about how to make these pieces truly wearable. I have developed a design philosophy that balances elegance and practicality – so versatility and comfort are key. For example, our Gypset earrings are just as good as the nights in the office, which allows you to wear proper clothes in both cases. I wanted to make timeless jewelry so that my work could be cherished, worn out and eventually passed through generations.
Q: What makes them unique in your works?
JM: I think JMs can be worn in many different environments, whether it is daily or smart activities – it really depends on their style. I love seeing how pieces like Ball N Chain Necklaces can go from one client to another in a brand new role. I think the versatility of these works is what makes them personal.
Q: How will you describe your customers and exactly how they wear jewelry?
JM: I would say I designed to supplement modern dressings, not a specific person. One of the most meaningful parts of what I do is seeing a bunch of wonderful and diverse women wearing my work and making themselves by choosing the way they look. The pieces were intentionally designed to blend perfectly with pre-existing jewelry wardrobes, so many of my clients paired the new JM with their work over the years.
Q: How did you decide to open a store in New York? What makes it feel right?
JM: We chose New York as our first international store because of the incredible enthusiasm and support we received from our American customers. It’s exciting to end up giving them a space with access to the vicinity of their home.
Q: What are you most excited about the opening of this new store?
JM: I have always loved the city and have a space on one of Manhattan’s most iconic shopping streets, which provides us with a great opportunity to attract more people while welcoming familiar faces. I’m so glad to really get to know our American clients, because spending time with them myself and the team will be invaluable.
